Sheba
From the moment I watched my first professional belly dancer, I knew that this was my destiny. I loved the beautiful costume, the glitter and sequins, the coins and bells. I loved the mystery behind this exotic dance form. I fell in love with the haunting music. Fifteen years of extensive dance training in Jazz, Tap, and Ballet only helped me prepare for the world of dance orientale.I started belly dancing 20 years ago, under the direction of Baba, artistic director for the Bal Aziza dance troupe and owner of “Bellygrams”. After years of studying under her direction, Baba announced her retirement, and I felt the next step for me was to buy the business.
In 1989 Mahala and I purchased the business and it became “Bellygrams by Mahala and Sheba”. At the same time, Mahala and I became Artistic Directors for Bal Aziza, introducing the troupe to new music and new moves as well as the history behind this dance style.
Through the years I have attended many workshops with internationally and nationally known instructors and continue this quest to learn more and more. What once was a hobby, has now become my life. I have taken the techniques I have learned, dissected them, practiced them, and then perfected them into my own style which I like to call “Cabaret with a Spanish flair.
I love to capture my audience with a flirty beledi, Spanish influenced Fan dance, beautiful veil dance, an exciting sword piece or just have fun interacting with the other dancers in our troupe. Best of all, I am watching my daughter Hadara, who is now a troupe member, develop into a wonderful dancer. Mother’s pride!
The troupe name may have changed to Desert Rhythms, but my love of the dance has remained constant. You can never learn enough, you can never dance enough.
